Upgrading … This may take a few minutes. (Firefox)

I recently updated to Firefox 3.0.6, and even prior to this I noticed a message box appeared every time a new window opened:

This may take several hours, actually.
This may take several hours, actually.

I’m not a big fan of this whole waiting thing, especially in my favored web browser, but I switched to Safari for a bit to let it do its thing.

Unfortunately, it never goes away.

Clicking Cancel doesn’t help much either, with the prompt: “Are you sure you want to cancel the upgrade?” Yes, I’m sure.

This plagued me for the past day, or so, and not wishing to spend an extra iota of brainpower on it, I’ve continued to click away at it, until my brain awoke and I saw the “Update Scanner” in the “Are you sure you want …” dialog box. A-ha!

Disabling the “Update Scanner” (or uninstalling … better) eliminates this issue…

I disabled it for now, but I think I'm actually going to Uninstall it.

For those non-Firefox advanced users, here’s the step-by-step:

  1. Tools Menu
  2. Select Add-ons
  3. Click on the Extensions tab if not selected
  4. Scroll down until you see the “Update Scanner” line
  5. Click “Uninstall
  6. Click, Yes, you want to uninstall it.
  7. Click “Restart Firefox
